Story of Andaz: The Hotel Experience
Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa is an experience in luxurious cultural immersion, a new kind of resort that celebrates all things local with a mix of posh sophistication and a decidedly convivial spirit. Since the earliest recorded history of the area until today, Arizona has been a place where art and nature co-exist without boundaries. The design, color, and heart of Andaz reflect an environment open to possibilities — a refreshing mix of old and new, classic style and innovative amenities.
Your introduction to the Andaz experience begins when you enter the Guest House, Andaz’s fresh answer to the hotel lobby. It feels like the inviting living room of a good friend, albeit one with fabulous taste in art and furniture. Not just the place to pick up your room key card, it’s also a place for relaxation (plenty of spots to sit with a cool beverage or a book from the library), creativity (take advantage of the coloring books), and connection (who’s up for some friendly competition over a board game?) Or discover something new at Textiles & Objects, the resort’s carefully curated collection of art and distinctive gifts, gathered with the intent of sending guests home with their own piece of Andaz.
The architecture and design aesthetic of desert modernism evokes the masters of the midcentury era, with floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light. Through the glass is a spectacular view of Camelback Mountain and the lush landscaping that flows throughout the 23-acre property. It’s this absence of boundaries that embodies the Andaz experience — inclusive, relaxed, stylish, creative. The sleek modernity is accented with textural elements: a sculptural brick wall that doubles as an art piece in its own right, rich, cedar-lined ceilings, the colorful whimsy of fiber art, and an ever-changing gallery, featuring the myriad talents of local artists.
Color plays a vital role in the environment at Andaz. Bright and playful hues, with a nod to the color palate of Alexander Girard, are woven throughout the public and private spaces of the resort, and inspiration is drawn from ancient societies that first inhabited the desert southwest and established trade, agriculture and water management systems that still exist today. The Zuni color wheel, with turquoise at its center, is part of the tapestry at Andaz and is reflected in the placement of the Turquoise Pool at the heart of the resort.
If color is the heart of Andaz, art is its soul. It is fortuitous that the Cattle Track artists’ compound, founded in the 1920s, is less than a mile down the road. From inception, Andaz has collaborated with the many talented painters, sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, print makers, fiber artists, textile designers, and performers associated with this legendary community. That relationship is evidenced in every space, both private and public. The Andaz Scottsdale Salon’s artists-in-residence contributes to a vibrant, one-of-a-kind guest experience, offering events, tours, concerts and classes to inform, inspire, and encourage connection between like-minded individuals.
A short distance further takes you to the Weft & Warp Art Bar + Kitchen. The glass-enclosed exhibition kitchen is an exciting invitation to a culinary arts experience that recalls friendly gatherings where everyone inevitably ends up hanging out in the kitchen. The open feel (and more gorgeous views of the pool and Camelback Mountain) features a kitchen table and high, countertop tables surrounding a plancha where Executive Chef Adam Sheff offers small and sharable plates that reflect local influences and ingredients in completely new ways. The serving pieces in the restaurant continue the artisanal theme, as many are handmade by Cattle Track ceramic artist Mary Van Dusen. Constraints fall away here, as well. An all-day menu allows you to enjoy brunch any time, day or night… so you can sleep in and still eat pancakes. When it comes to cocktail time, we’ve got you covered with the best bar snacks and artisanal cocktails, each crafted to delight, with unexpected flavors coaxed from local ingredients.
Step outside the Guest House for some desert air and a variety of comfortable spots to sit and have a conversation or, in the evenings, gather around one of the many fire pits that dot the property as the sun sets behind Camelback Mountain and the sky fills with stars.
The spirit of connection continues throughout the resort, where clusters of low-slung bungalows house just over 200 guest rooms and suites, each with its own front terrace, many with Mangaris wood-accented private patios, modern exterior furniture, and outdoor showers. Colorfully cushioned banco seating and teak tables are just right for enjoying morning coffee or an evening cocktail al fresco, prepared with our complementary in-room mixers (pony-size spirits are available), and accompanied by locally curated snacks or something from the in-room dining menu.
On the south side of the property lies The Retreat at Andaz —set apart for the ultimate in exclusivity for wedding guests, corporate retreats, a celebrity get-away, or private social gathering with family and friends. This secluded, “resort within a resort” features four bungalows, with a total of 22 rooms surrounding a private pool and shaded lawn. The Albers House is The Retreat’s luxurious suite, furnished with chic, mid-century modern furnishings and eye-catching art, has plenty of space for entertaining, or keeping all to yourself. A cozy patio off the master bedroom is appointed with an outdoor shower. The private, exterior entertaining patio comes alive in the evening with a fire pit surrounded by cushioned banco seating. The views of Camelback Mountain will take your breath away, night or day. The Retreat is convenient to the Palo Verde Spa & Apothecary, Fitness Center, and meeting and event spaces.
Step inside any of our guest rooms and enjoy tasteful luxury, with every design element thoughtfully presented. Skylights, beamed ceilings, sliding barn doors, and hand-troweled walls are the perfect backdrop for the prominently featured art vignettes that vary widely from room to room. The art includes textile design prints by Janet Towbin, colorful etchings by sculptor and painter Larry Passey, and drawings, paintings, and prints by Koryn Woodward, Brent Bond, Mark McDowell, and Matt Magee, to name a few.
Your sleek, light-filled bathroom is stocked with premium botanical toiletries and plush towels. It’s the perfect space to refresh or get ready for an evening out.
As comfortable as your room might be, there is plenty to enjoy “beyond the bungalow” at Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Spa. The spectacular Turquoise Pool is a perfect spot to soak up both the sun and the scene. Relax on the main pool deck or in your own private cabana. Cabanas feature comfortable furnishings, warm Mangaris wood accents, privacy curtains, and flat-screen TVs for a premium poolside experience. The Turquoise Pool Bar offers the ultimate pool party menu of light, casual bites like ceviche, grilled wraps, and skewers, along with a selection of refreshing drinks, beer, specialty cocktails, and even spiked popsicles.
